Naomi watkins
Naomi Watkins is an Indigenous artist based in Vancouver, BC, currently completing an MFA at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
Working across painting, carving, audio, and video, Watkins explores themes of displacement, reconnection, and the animacy of other-than-human beings. They travel to remote or personally significant sites, gathering sounds, natural materials, and personal reflections that inform immersive, process-driven installations and multimedia works.
Watkins’ acrylic and oil landscapes invite viewers to consider the spiritual connection to land and how each individual navigates it. By responding intuitively to each place they visit–engaging in a form of peripatetic research–they examine how land, memory, and lived experience converge. Ultimately, their work aims to spark conversations about belonging, revealing that both humans and other-than-human-beings participate in shaping our sense of place and identity.
