Exhibition: Echos of Self
Threshold is a 12x7ft oil painting on three panels depicting an outdoor architectural space. During Fall 2023 of first year graduate studies I was researching how spaces hold a collective consciousness and animism within spaces. The area depicted was a spot in East Vancouver that I connected to strongly and to recreate that spiritual experience, I used large scale painting to create an immersive image to walk through accompanied by speakers playing place-based atmospheric sound. Sounds of windchimes, knocking, footsteps and rain would oscillate between the two speakers on each side.
For the Echos of Self exhibition, the speakers were removed and the title was changed from Threshold to i am not hiding behind this painting as an inside joke to the following critique of Do We Really Need Naomi?
